The SGS Symphonic Band shone at the 51st National Symphonic Band Competition in Paipa

On the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th the SGS Youth Symphonic Band took part in the 51st National Symphonic Band Competition in Paipa. This event is one of the most representative of musical culture in Colombia. 38 Symphonic Bands from all over the country took part, highlighting the youth category as one of the strongest and most competitive of the contest.

Our Band proudly represented Bogota and SGS, performing two pieces that fully demonstrated their skill and talent.

In the first round, the heritage phase, the band performed:

  • Santa Marta Tiene Tren (tribute piece, arrangements by Juan David Hoyos)

  • La Gata Golosa ( a native work from Cundinamarca)

  • San Pelayo (by Victoriano Valencia)

During this perfomance the musicians were accompanied on stage by their parents with a performance that received a standing ovation from the audience.

In the private round, the Band performed a demanding and varied repertoire:

  • Jubilant Overture - Alfred Reed

  • Santa Marta Tiene Tren - tribute work

  • Pajuan Suite - Óscar Fernando Trujillo

  • Puszta Suite - Jan Van der Roost

The Band performed four pieces in thirty minutes, demonstrating their technical and artistic excellence.

In addition, the Band took part in the traditional Verbena de Paipa, performing music representative of the Colombian culture. In the great parade of the 38 bands, they played with groups from all over the country promoting the national musical heritage.

This achievement was possible thanks to the commitment of the families, who with their enthusiasm and support strengthen the community spirit that characterizes SGS. Also to the dedication of our musicians, and that of the Music Department, led by Juan Fernando Olaya, the conductor Omar Andrés Cifuentes Gil and the music teachers Edgar Hurtado, Mariana Méndez, Edwin Gómez Betancourt and Cristian Morales.

The SGS Symphonic Band continues to consolidate itself as a national reference in music, promoting values such as discipline, teamwork and proudly carrying the name of our School to the top.
