CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMME

Let's begin with some history. Over 150 years ago, the University of Cambridge, seeking to raise educational standards by providing exams to students outside of the University itself, created the ‘Local Examinations Syndicate’. By designing and giving exams to a broader population, the University began to establish itself as what is now one of the largest international assessment agencies recognized by governments around the world.

What began in 1858 with 370 pupils taking exams in England, is now an international programme with more than 8 million pupils in 160 countries sitting exams. In fact, there has always been a global view; exams were made available internationally as early as 1864. The Cambridge curriculum, programmes and examinations that have been adopted in Colombia have a long and successful history around the world.

In 1998, the Local Examinations Syndicate created a new structure, changing their name and establishing three exam boards or groups. The first group is Cambridge Assessment International Education (referred to as Cambridge International), which is the world’s largest provider of international education programmes and qualifications for 5- to 19-year-olds. Next, Cambridge Assessment English provides the world’s leading range of exams and certificates that evaluate the level of English (as a second language). And, finally, the OCR (Oxford, Cambridge, and RSA), is a leading exam board (UK only).

Worldwide, more than 10,000 schools are part of the Cambridge Assessment International Education learning community. In Colombia, as of 2017, there are more than 35 Cambridge Schools that have been approved and certified and continue to meet the demanding criteria in order to offer the Cambridge International programme.

In Bogotá, St. George’s School (SGS) was founded as a bilingual school in 1958 and has always stood out for its academic standards in languages, maths, sciences, arts, music and the humanities. For more than 25 years, the pupils' level of English has been assessed by the Cambridge English Language examinations. In 2012, SGS became certified as a Cambridge International school.

Cambridge International designs all curriculum and assessments with five learner (and teacher) attributes in mind allowing them to provide an excellent, international education to pupils around the world:

The Cambridge Assessment International Education has become an integral part of our longstanding tradition for excellence. We provide an international, multilingual education that encourages our pupils to be curious, independent thinkers who can engage positively with a rapidly changing world.

In August 2021, the University of Cambridge merged its publishing and assessment operations to create a single organization called Cambridge University Press and Assessment. This worldwide organization offers leading academic research, learning and assessment backed by the first-class teaching and research of the University of Cambridge.

The SGS international curriculum and the Cambridge Assessment International programme does not change under this new structure. We are part of a new initiative to "spread knowledge, encourage curiosity and support understanding around the world.
